The Project
Located at 40 Macquarie Street, Barton, on a prime corner site close to Parliament House, Maddocks House features a spectacular internal atrium that rises through the three floors of the building. Intermain’s design team has completely revitalised this space, removing a large concrete planter to improve traffic flow and updating the finishes and furnishings to meet modern aesthetics, enhancing the quality of this common area for building tenants.
Design Inspiration
Taking inspiration from the atrium’s unique shape, our designer incorporated further curved elements in the flooring, planters, and furnishings, providing elegant symmetry and balance. This theme continues in the arc panelling of the lift wall and columns. A calming palette of cool, nature-inspired tones and textures has created a welcoming space that benefits from the natural light streaming down from above.
DDA-Compliance Upgrades
This project included essential DDA-compliance upgrades, such as an enhanced wheelchair ramp, clear wayfinding signage, and the refurbishment of ground floor amenities. The bathroom spaces have been refreshed with quality fixtures and fittings, including glazed porcelain floor and wall tiles, polished stone benchtops, and delightful matte green pill inset basins paired with matte black hardware.
Minimising Disruption
Intermain’s delivery team worked diligently to minimise disruption for building tenants throughout the construction programme. Demolition work was conducted outside of business hours, and a staged hoarding approach, incorporating custom plastic screening, was used to prevent dust from spreading throughout the building.
Project Impact
These upgrades significantly enhance the functionality, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal of the common areas, making them more inviting for visitors and helping our client, Real I.S. Australia, to retain and attract tenants for their commercial asset.
