The basement of one of Sydney’s oldest bank buildings has been transformed into new offices, a buyers area and pearl detailing room for the Paspaley Pearls group. All works were carried out under the guidance of the National Heritage Board. Finishes including honed marble, timber and finely detailed steel were chosen to offset the steel of the original bank vaults. The main corridor includes a vaulted ceiling with original tiles, carefully restored and up-lit, while the vault doors have also been restored providing the connection with the building’s past. Solutions to accommodate the interior’s heritage status included the use of velcro wall panels to avoid penetrating surfaces. All finishes were highly complex in their detailing and were only possible because of the close collaboration between SJB and the Intermain team.
